ISSA Professional Standards of Personal Training
ISSA reserves the right to cancel professional membership and revoke certification for violations of professional conduct. Any allegation of violation of the Professional Standards of Personal Training will be reviewed by an ethics committee. The trainer will be notified of the investigation and will have the opportunity to provide evidence that contradicts the complaint. Notification of the ethics committee’s decision will be provided within seven days of the start of the investigation.
ISSA expects its certified members to conduct themselves according to the following professional standards in order to provide the highest quality of service possible to their clients and the community. An ISSA Certified Personal Trainer should:
A trainer understands that earning an ISSA fitness certification is a process that ensures clients are being served by a knowledgeable, reputable individual. Trainers should never provide certification exam answers to students studying for a fitness certification exam, take a fitness certification exam for another student, or post fitness certification exam answers on websites.
Personal trainers provide their clients with a service, which means that the trainer should abide by the rules of good customer service and should:
A trainer should ask their client if they are experiencing any discomfort or pain during exercises and listen to their responses. A trainer should also listen to and respond to client questions and discuss problems that clients encounter when following an exercise program or nutritional recommendations. The fitness professional should be focused on collecting and responding appropriately to all information (physical and verbal) that is pertinent to making sure that the client avoids injury and reaches their fitness goals.
If a client misses a session, a trainer who cares will call to make sure the client is ok and encourage the client toward his or her fitness goals. A good trainer will give clients tips on how to shop for healthy food and prepare healthy meals to ensure that they are eating a sensible diet for their training needs. A trainer should provide clients with the resources necessary to learn this information on their own and put it into action.
Virtually every profession requires continuing education, and the personal training profession should be no exception. A client entrusts their body and life to their personal trainer, and turns to them for questions and advice. A trainer must be able to provide their client with accurate, current information, and this is accomplished by continual learning throughout their fitness career.
Fitness professionals are responsible for self-assessment of their personal strengths and weaknesses, and for completing continuing education programs designed to ensure their own professional competence. This means that a personal trainer should be able to identify where his/her knowledge is lacking and should take the steps necessary to rectify this situation by actively pursuing further knowledge in that area.
ISSA certified trainers are required to complete a minimum of 20 continuing education hours every 2 years to maintain their professional status. Failure to meet the continuing education requirements at the time of renewal results in revocation of professional status and ISSA credentials.
A personal trainer should never knowingly endanger their clients or put their clients at risk. This means that the trainer should:
Practice within their knowledge and skill domain and refer clients to other fitness and health professionals as necessary.
Never attempt to diagnose an injury or any other medical or health-related condition.
Never give the client any kind of medical advice.
Never prescribe or dispense any kind of medication whatsoever (including over-the-counter medications) to anyone.
Never attempt to treat any health condition or injury (except as standard first aid or CPR/AED First Aid procedure may require).
In the event of an emergency, a trainer should call 911, perform any necessary standard first aid and CPR/AED First Aid procedures, and have the client transported to advanced medical care.
Never recommend an exercise for anyone with a known medical problem without first obtaining clearance to do so and/or instructions from the attending qualified medical professional.
In addition to helping the client achieve their own personal fitness goal, a personal trainer’s long-term objective should be to educate the client and effectively draw them into the fitness lifestyle and bring them to optimal health. The point of personal training sessions is for the client to gradually develop the knowledge and discipline necessary to maintain a fitness lifestyle on their own. A trainer should always have the client’s best interests in mind, and that means helping the client reach the point where they no longer need the personal trainer’s help to maintain their fitness. The trainer should demonstrate exercise skills for the client (including proper form when performing exercises), provide the client with facts or background information regarding exercises and procedures, provide the client with feedback on their performance, and ask questions regarding exercises and procedures to see if the client is learning the necessary knowledge.
Data collection is a continual process for a personal trainer, since that data provides the trainer with feedback regarding the client’s fitness plan and lets him/her know when changes or modifications should be made to the exercise program or nutritional recommendations. A trainer should document every step of the client’s progress, from their initial consultation until they are no longer a client. It is good practice to keep the files of former clients intact with all records in case the information is needed to train the client in the future.
A trainer should not talk about the client with other people, and he/she should never release any of their client records without written permission from the client.
A personal trainer should honestly and completely represent professional knowledge, skills, training, and certifications to clients, employers, and colleagues. He/She should be honest with clients about the results that they can expect (and in what timeline) if they follow the exercise program and nutrition recommendations given.
Charge fees that are reasonable, legitimate, and commensurate with services delivered and responsibility accepted, disclosing any additional fees and services to clients in advance.
A personal trainer should charge the client what their services are actually worth. Personal training fees are usually based on the trainer’s experience, education level, knowledge, reputation, and the demonstrated results that he/she has achieved with former clients. Clients should be provided with a contract before their first training session that lays out the fees, payment schedule, session cancellation policy, etc. up front.
Always maintain a professional demeanor, not becoming overly friendly with clients.
Personal trainers should not become intimately involved with their clients. That is overstepping the boundaries of professionalism, and is unacceptable.
